The blockbuster three-day fest is back. Governors Ball 2011 was the inaugural year of this festival which quickly became so big that it had to move from its namesake Governors Island to the larger Randall’s Island. After a knockout success last year with headliners like Kanye West, even the torrential rain that ruined the grass couldn’t stop this music festival from coming back. Fortunately for the promoters, after helping to replace the lawn at Randall’s Island, they have been given the go ahead to return.
This year’s lineup is sure to impress: The Strokes, OutKast, Vampire Weekend, Jack White, and TV on the Radio… just to name a few.
One of the biggest performances to see is perhaps the one that makes no sound at all: the silent disco. A DJ under a large tent mixes music that can only be heard through wireless headphones. To the outside observer it looks like everyone is dancing in a silent tent. The reality is that everyone is listening to music on headphones making for one of the most memorable sights at this legendary festival.
